Goals still the same for UNI despite Kalin's injury

Optimism was very high at Monday's University of Northern Iowa women's basketball media day. This despite the fact the team has lost the Missouri Valley Conference's reigning player of the year for the season.

That was much of the focus during the afternoon as senior point guard K.K. Armstrong takes over the starting role for the injured Jacqui Kalin.  Armstrong's been a strong presence in the Panther line-up the last few years, but mainly provided a spark coming off the bench.

Still, she's confident in her ability to step into her new role.

"I've been ready for it.  I came off the bench and provided energy and enthusiasm," Armstrong said. "It's just going to be 20 more minutes, so I'm excited."

Head Coach Tanya Warren agrees.

"K.K. leads more a little bit by example in terms of how hard she plays, how she sacrifices her body.  She has great vision.  She does a good job of making those around her better," Warren said.

Kalin's also confident her replacement will pick up the slack.

"I know that she'll pick up on a few of the spots that are left off, but in general, in her own way, I know that she's going to take care of this team very well," she said.

The Panthers are coming off back to back appearances in the NCAA tournament.  The quest for a third straight begins on November 6 against Maryville.
