MARION (KWWL) -

The first section of the Mary Lundby Trail Bridge is set to be installed Tuesday at Pinicon Ridge Park.

The bridge, which is named for the former District 18 State Senator who died in 2009, will connect the Flying Squirrel Campground with the rest of the park.

Linn County Conservation staff says the bridge will be installed in five sections is scheduled to be completed next year.  A dedication ceremony will be scheduled after that.

"I am pleased to visually witness the first sections of the Mary Lundby Trail Bridge being put in place. This bridge is a tribute to a great Iowa legislator who built so many bridges herself when working with Iowans of all backgrounds and political parties to make Iowa a better place to work and live," Brent Oleson, Linn County Supervisor and long-time friend of Mary Lundby, said in a written statement.

"Mary Lundby was an avid supporter of conservation initiatives and of Pinicon Ridge Park in particular," Dan Biechler, Linn County Conservation Director, said in a written statement. "She was instrumental in securing funding for the trail bridge, and so it is our great honor to name the bridge in her memory."

Mary Lundby served in the Iowa House of Representatives for eight years and the Iowa Senate for 14 years.  She died in January 2009 after a three-year battle with cervical cancer.
