Iowa City bank robbery suspect arrested in Egypt

A man suspected of robbing an Iowa City bank has been arrested in Egypt.

In June 2009, the American Bank and Trust in Iowa City was robbed by a man with a gun. The robber ran away and was picked up by two other men in a gold car.

In September 2010, a warrant was issued for Mohamed Bahkit Elkamil. FBI officials learned Elkamil had left the country.  Officials say the FBI legal attache in Cairo was notified last weekend that Elkamil was being held in Egypt. He was brought back to the U.S. on Thursday.

Elkamil is being held in New York. He is expected to be returned to Iowa to face charges in the robbery.

Another man, 19-year-old Charles Curry, was arrested in connection with the robbery. Police say Curry was in the bank shortly before the robbery. He later used money stolen from the bank to post bond at the Johnson County jail.
