Tigers advance, Yankees staying home

The Tigers are headed to Texas for their first American League Championship Series appearance in five years.

Don Kelly and Delmon Young hit back-to-back solo homers in the top of the first inning and Detroit went on to beat the Yankees 3-2 in the decisive fifth game of their AL division series.

Five days after he was shelled by the Bombers while taking the loss in the rain-delayed series opener, Doug Fister held the Yanks to a run and five hits over five innings.

New York didn't score until Robinson Cano's solo blast in the bottom of the fifth, a half-inning after Victor Martinez' RBI single staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead.

Jose Valverde worked a perfect ninth for his 51st save in as many chances this year, ending the game by fanning Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and ended the series with a .111 batting average.

It's the first time Detroit has won a deciding game in a postseason since the 1968 World Series.

The Tigers will play the Rangers for the AL pennant, with Game 1 scheduled for Saturday in the Lone Star State.
