Phone scam targets personal banking information

Thieves are using a phone scam to targeting wallets all across Iowa with a convincing story.

"I got a recorded message saying my ATM card had been deactivated and to press one to reinstate it, " said Dan Reinders of Des Moines. "Then it asked for my credit card info and I hung up."

Many of the calls claim to be from Wells Fargo Bank, but that may not be the only bank name being used. Police think the callers are using fake numbers with the call to fool victim's caller ID systems.

Officials with the Cedar Rapids Police Department say never give out your personal information if you didn't initiate the call. If you think you've been targeted by one of these calls, and did give out personal information, you should contact the police department in your city.
