Free trade agreements advance in Congress

Posted:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

A U.S. House committee has signed off on three long-pending free trade agreements, setting the stage for the full House to approve the measures next week.

The Ways and Means Committee votes on the trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama come just two days after President Barack Obama submitted them to Congress.

But it's also been years since the three deals were initially signed during the George W. Bush administration.  The Obama White House renegotiated changes in the deals and has demanded that they be linked to extension of a program that helps workers displaced by foreign competition.

The Senate has already passed the worker aid bill and the House is expected to approve the three trade deals along with the worker aid bill next week.
