Healthy diet in pregnancy reduces risk of birth defects

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A healthy diet during pregnancy may be key to reducing the risk of serious birth defects.

A Stanford University study looked at the overall diets of more than 10,000 women, before and during pregnancy.

Those who ate the healthiest were the least likely to give birth to a child with spinal cord or brain malformations, or a cleft lip or palate.

It's the first time the overall quality of a pregnancy diet was linked to reducing the risk of birth defects, not just a single nutrient like folic acid.
