Race supporting breast cancer breaks record

It was a sea of purple shirts on Sunday in Cedar Rapids as thousands took the streets for the 21st Annual Especially For You Race Against Breast Cancer.

This year's turnout was the largest in the race's history.  Organizers say 15,792 people registered this year compared to 15,464 last year.

More than $375,000 was raised to fund mammogram's and other breast-care services for women and men who can't afford them.

In 21 years, Especially For You has raised more than $2.1 million.  Last year, 605 people received 831 services because of the money raised.

The race, which is co-founded by General Mills and Mercy Medical Center includes a 5K run and walk and a one-mile family fun walk.

The Especially for You Race has experienced tremendous growth since the first race in 1991 when 1,078 people participated.

Participants in this year's event represented 495 cities in 27 states.  Other participants came from as far away as Australia and the Czech Republic.

Participants ranged in age from 6-months to 100-years old.  The oldest participants were Anthony and Stephanie Kilkenny from Kansas.
