Breaking ground on the future Cedar Falls Scheels

On a brisk fall morning, a group of Cedar Valley workers are celebrating spring -- well, Spring 2013. Saturday, employees from both Waterloo and Cedar Falls Scheels stores helped break ground on a new superstore in Cedar Falls.

"This means a lot. It means a lot to our crews -- we have some veteran people who have worked with us for 20+ years. It's very exciting for them, the way the company's going to see something happen in our community," said Cedar Falls store manager Steve Phyfe.

Scheels employees from Waterloo and Cedar Falls will move into the new store when it opens, the locations at Crossroads Mall and College Square Mall will close. The future location is a 100,000 square foot stand-alone building, located on Viking Plaza near Target in Cedar Falls.

"This area has a lot to offer," said Phyfe. "It's a beautiful area out here and I think it will be a new experience for a lot of people."

The expansion to this location not only shows the strength of Scheels as a company, but also the strength of our local economy -- and in particular, the Viking Plaza corridor. Walmart, Blaine's Farm and Fleet, and Target are among the stores already located in the area.

"They kind of judge where the marketplace is, and where people are that are going to be shopping at their facility. So Scheels made the best decision they could to be in a place where they believe their customers are," said Greater Cedar Valley Alliance President Steve Dust.

The expansion will bring a couple dozen additional jobs when the store opens, and an economic boost while it's under construction.

"100,000 square feet of new facility is going to bring a fair amount of construction activity. And that's important as well -- putting people to work at a time when we need it," said Dust.

Company officials said they will keep at least one location open in the Cedar Valley during construction. They will have to close both stores a couple of weeks before the grand opening in order to move the merchandise.
