Iowa Democrats choose Liz Mathis to run for District 18 Senate seat

HIAWATHA (KWWL) -

A Special Nominating Convention accepted the nomination of Liz Mathis to represent the Democratic Party in the race for Senate District 18 Wednesday night. Officials say, Mathis received the nomination with overwhelming support in a roll call vote.

The seat had been held by State Senator Swati Dandekar. The democrat left the Senate when Governor Terry Branstad asked her to serve on the Iowa Utilities Board.

"I'm honored to accept this nomination," Mathis said. "I believe District 18 needs a dedicated representative in the Iowa Senate to end the gridlock and see us through long-term economic progress."

Mathis will face republican Cindy Golding in the race. The democrats currently hold a slight majority in the Senate. If Golding were to win the contest, it would change the balance of power in the body.
