Pancakes for Camp Courageous

JONES COUNTY (KWWL) -

Camp Courageous continued a tradition of more than three decades on Sunday morning, with its annual and popular pancake breakfast fundraiser and open house.

An estimated 2,000 people attended the event, which will bring in more than $10,000, between the cost of admission and additional donations.

The camp operates on an annual budget of about $2 million, camp director Charlie Becker said.

Camp Courageous serves people with special needs -- more than 6,000 campers each year.

"Camp Courageous is run entirely on donations," Becker said. "There's no government money, there's no formal sponsorships, so we're not a part of a larger organization, and we don't pay anybody to go out and raise money for the camps. So that means that these folks come out here and they give $5; every penny of it gets to where it's supposed to go."

The camp also relies on funds from its annual omelet breakfast in the spring.
