Clutier restaurant finally opens after storm damage

Recovery from a storm this summer continues in Tama County.  A July storm packing 100-plus mile an hour winds caused considerable damage there.  Clutier's fire station was destroyed in the storm.  The Czech Point Restaurant and Pub was set to have its grand opening.  But it suffered damage in the storm as parts of the roof and windows were blown away.  And now the restaurant is opening its doors, while hoping to spur further recovery.

The Czech Point Restaurant and Pub is now open.  It's the only eatery in the small Tama County community of Clutier.  Restoring the 1900s era Main Street building took a bit longer than expected, after July's wind storm blew away roofing and windows, pushing back remodeling progress.

"That was rather depressing because we were on a forward momentum.  And all of a sudden, we had that devastation.  But we lived through it and certainly had minimal damaged compared to a lot of other people.  It's just on of those situations that you have to persevere and move on," said Paul Dvorak, Czech Point owner.

And now, Czech Point's restoration, from top to bottom, inside and out, is complete.  It's been a labor of love for Clutier native and owner Paul Dvorak.  For him, the venture isn't aimed at making lots of money.  He's just hoping the business will help bring people back into town.

"We felt that if we built it, they'll come.  And we just concluded our grand opening, which was Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  And we had very successful support from the community.  And it's all about the community.  I want it to be alive in Clutier again," Dvorak said.

And if the restaurant continues to be a success, it might spur more storm recovery and the restoration of other area businesses.

"We're trying to take a lead in this area and hopefully the other buildings here that are deteriorated and so forth will be repaired.  So we're looking forward to rebuilding the community in its entirety," said Dvorak.

Already, Czech Point Restaurant is providing a bit of an economic boost to Clutier.  With a total of 19 full and part time workers, the restaurant is the city's largest employer.
