NEW DETAILS: Driver hits Waterloo church, truck flips

Some tense moments in Waterloo after a driver loses control of his truck on his way to pick up lunch. Witnesses say the driver of the truck was on Broadway Street going at a pretty high rate of speed around 12:30 p.m. They say he narrowly missed hitting a couple of children on a sidewalk, before hitting the side of New Hope Baptist Church at the corner of Broadway and Conger Streets.  His truck then scraped a traffic light pole and a fire hydrant before it flipped over onto Conger St. Emergency crews were able to remove him from his truck and take him to a waterloo hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"I just thought someone was chasing him, and then my brother-in-law told me it looked like he was falling asleep behind the wheel," said a witness, Nickolas Randal.

The man's co-workers say he was going to get tacos on his lunch hour when the crash happened. His name has not been released.

UPDATE:  According to crash reports, the driver is Lyle Rees from Garber.  Police say Rees does not have a driver's license and does not have insurance on his vehicle.  Damage to the church is estimated at $20,000.

A search of online court records also shows Lyle Lavern Rees, (DOB 05/03/1954), has similar traffic violations in the past - no driver's license, no insurance,  no registration, and also a citation for failing to leave information or proper aid.

Family members tell us Rees was having a heart attack, and that's why he crashed.
