Cedar Rapids fire heavily damages home

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids family is trying to figure out what happened to cause a house they are trying to sell to go up in flames this morning.

Around 2 a.m., Jeremy Elkin, 33, was outside of the house, at 1371 19th Ave, boxing up items in his detached garage. He was walking back to go inside when he saw smoke coming from the front of the home. He called 911.

Cedar Rapids Fire Department arrived a short time later.   They believe the fire originated in the kitchen and spread to two adjacent bedrooms.  By the time they started fighting the blaze, it had already spread to the attic.

The home sustained smoke, heat and fire damage.

Elkin was the only one home at the time of the fire. The rest of the family was at their new home.

The family was in the process of moving and most of their things were at their new home, but they did lose some of personal items.
