Updated:Structure fire damages Iowa City business and apartments

Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Sam Shraiberg was awakened by the sound of fire alarms in his third story apartment from the newer built Vogel Building next door. He immediately evacuated the building.

"I saw a couple of fire trucks, a little bit of smoke, and I don't think anybody thought it was really serious at the time," Sam Schraiberg, University of Iowa student, said.

He said the fire turned more serious about a half hour later. Multiple witnesses believe the fire started in the Bruegger's Bagel Bakery on Linn St. Heavy flames and smoke could be seen pouring from the top floors of the structure. The fire spread to a nearby building

"It really is unbelievable, pretty scary," Schraiberg said.

Crews from several area fire departments used ladder trucks to attack the blaze from above.

Rushing water poured down Iowa Ave.

Many students lined the streets, finding it hard to believe what they were seeing.

"I'm just here to watch it. I've never seen anything quite this big," Christopher Harrkuhn, University of Iowa student, said.

Crews will likely remain on scene for the rest of Saturday morning, trying to put out the stubborn fire.

Tenants living in buildings in the area were evacuated with little indication when they'll be let back in.

"At first I was worried about my stuff, but I'll be patient, hoping they do the best they can do," Schraiberg said.

There have also been no reports of any injuries from the fire.
