WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A former Waterloo Black Hawk has signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Blake Kessel, a defenseman with Waterloo from 2006-2008, signed an entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Kessel played in 59 of the 60 regular season games his rookie year and was picked by the New York Islanders in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In his second season, the Verona, Wisconsin native, led the league in scoring by a defenseman, racking up 19 goals and 38 assists for 57 points.  He was named the 2007-2008 Defenseman of the Year and was named to the All-USHL First Team.

Following his two seasons in Waterloo, Kessel played three seasons at the University of New Hampshire.

Kessel's brother, Phil, is a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs and his cousin and former RoughRider, David Moss, now plays for the Calgary Flames.
