Fighting Saints win, RoughRiders fall in day one of Fall Classic


Day one of the USHL Fall Classic saw mixed outcomes for Eastern Iowa teams.

On Wednesday night in Sioux City, the Dubuque Fighting Saints picked up right where they left off last season as they shut-out the Omaha Lancers 4-0.

The 2011 Clark Cup Champions rallied behind goaltender Matt Morris, the 2011 Clark Cup MVP, in his first full game of the preseason.

After a scoreless first period, Eric Freschi put the Saints on the board Lawrence Cornellier got a rebound off Lancer goalie John Keeney and got the puck to Freschi who put it in the back of the net.

Max Gardiner made it 2-0 about 10 minutes later on a power play goal when he beat Keeney through the five hole.

Mike Matheson finished off the second period scoring on a shot from deep in the slot.

With a 3-0 lead in the third, Matt Youso scored the final goal with a top shelf shot.

Morris stopped 20 shots for Dubuque in the shutout win.

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders were on the other end of the spectrum Wednesday, falling to Sioux City 6-2.

The RoughRiders took the lead in the first period with a goal from Jono Davis.  Sioux City tied the game later in the period.

In the second, Sioux City took a 2-1 lead, but 12 seconds later Greg Amlong scored Cedar Rapids' final goal of the game to tie it at 2-2.

Sioux City would not look back from there, scoring two more in the second period and two in the third period to take the easy win.

RoughRider goalie Matt McNeely made 25 saves, but Cedar Rapids was outshoot 31-25.

Cedar Rapids hits the ice again on Thursday when they take on Youngstown at 4:00 p.m.  Dubuque plays Tri-City at 7:00 p.m.

The Waterloo Black Hawks play their first game of the Fall Classic Thursday afternoon when they face-off against Fargo at 1:00 p.m.
