IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Brett Greenwood's family released a statement Wednesday to update his condition.

The following statement was released through the University of Iowa Athletic Department:

"During this very difficult time for our family, we have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from family, friends, the community and the Hawkeye Nation. It means a great deal to us to have so many people reaching out to us and telling us that they are praying for Brett."

"Brett continues to fight and to make improvements. We would ask that you continue to keep Brett in your thoughts and prayers, now more than ever. We also appreciate everyone respecting our family's privacy at this time."

The 24-year old former Hawkeye collapsed on September 9 during an afternoon workout at the Pleasant Valley football field in Bettendorf.

He was initially taken to Trinity Medical Center but then later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where he remains.

Greenwood had signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was cut on September 2.

"Wear Green for Greenwood" day was held on September 14 in honor of his 24th birthday, and now some fans are asking others to wear green to the Hawkeyes game against the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
