High speed chase near Oelwein ends with Missouri man in custody

A Missouri man faces charges after leading Oelwein police on a high speed chase.

It started just after 10:00 a.m. Monday when police received reports of an erratic driver approaching the city on Highway 150. Officers say the driver sped off when they tried to stop the vehicle.

Police say the driver, 21-year-old Erione Watson of St. Louis, Missouri, led them through residential areas on the east side of Oelwein. Police say at one point Watson drove into yards as he neared a dead end street.

The chase moved out of town on Highway 3, then moved to Highway 187. Officials say the chase topped speeds of 120 miles per hour. It ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of 230th Street and Highway 20 in Buchanan County.

"Due to the initial call, the officer's observations, the subjects driving behavior and other factors considered by the officer; our officers determined that the pursuit needed to continue for the safety of our citizens," said Chief Jeremy Logan.  "Officers continually assess these situations as they develop.  Officers from the Oelwein Police Department and the assisting agencies performed in a professional manner that was in the best interest of the public which resulted in apprehending this dangerous subject with no one being injured."

Watson faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, eluding, and several traffic violations.
