Soggy annual Dubuque Arboretum festival

The rain was no good for the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens' annual fundraiser Sunday.

The event, called Arboretum Autumn, raises money for special projects on the grounds. This year's funds are for a sound system, which organizers say will cost more than $10,000.

There was a silent auction, with items such as scarecrows designed and created by local volunteers.

This is the fall fundraiser's fourth year, and organizer and volunteer Mary Lursen said it's no stranger to bad weather.

"Unfortunately, the same thing happened last year," she said. "Usually, this place is full with people wandering around, so it definitely does have an impact."

The Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is the nation's largest all-volunteer arboretum, with more than 300 volunteers.

Funds for upkeep come largely from the gift shop and weddings.
