It was a match up of one of the more powerful offenses in the state versus one of the stingiest defenses.
Something had to give. And it did.
Second-ranked City High used a 35 point second half to blow out seventh ranked Xavier 52-24. The Saints hadn't allowed a point in three games prior to their match up with City High.
Early on, the game seemed poised to be close. In a 3-3 game in the second quarter, City High quarterback Jasper Washington scored on a 15 yard keeper to put the Little Hawks up 10-3.
But Xavier would answer immediately. The Saints' Reggie Schulte rolled out and hit Logan Jones in the end zone to cap off a long drive and tie things at 10-10.
The Saints seemed to have stopped the Little Hawks on the ensuing series. But on 4th and 5, in punt formation, Washington pulled it down and ran for a first down. A face mask penalty at the end of the play put the Little Hawks deep in Saints territory. Ronald Thompson would score later on a 7 yard run to put City High up 17-10 at the half.
In the second half, the Little Hawks broke the game wide open. Washington hit Jeremy Johnson on swing passes for touchdown on ensuing drives, Ronald Thompson broke off a vintage 75 yard touchdown run, and by the time it was all over the Little Hawks and racked up 52 points.
Ronald Thompson, who set a school single game record rushing for 362 yards the week before against Iowa City West, went for 230 yards in this one.
