UNI ranked with Midwest's top colleges

An area college continues to be ranked among the top universities. U.S. News and World Report puts the University of Northern Iowa second in the "Best Regional Universities (Midwest)" for public universities.

This year more than 11,000 students are attending the University of Northern Iowa. Hope Wilson, a sophomore, is one of those students. She feels UNI is deserving of the attention by the national magazine.

"When I first came to UNI during my senior year of high school, I immediately felt really fortunate and really at home. I came from a small Midwest town so it's kind of important to me to find a place where I would feel at home again just in a different area," said Wilson.

UNI is ranked 2nd for public universities in the Midwest region and 16th in the combined category of public and private colleges.

Gloria Gibson, the Executive Vice President and Provost for UNI says these ranking come from a lot of hard work from every corner of campus.

"If you look at our class sizes, if you look at the quality time that faculty spend with our students it really is very important as we look at the quality and how we are ranked," said Gibson.

Some find these rankings even more impressive due to the fact UNI has been forced to make some tough decisions to make up for millions of dollars in state budget cuts.

"We are facing additional cuts, but we want to make sure that when students leave UNI that they enter the workforce and they are prepared for that workforce and or graduate or professional program they might enter," said Gibson.

UNI isn't the only state school to end up on a list. The University of Iowa is ranked 28th on the ''Top Public Universities in the United States.'' Iowa State was ranked 44th in the same list.
