Mom travels country to help children battling cancer

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

One woman is turning her personal loss into gains for hundreds of thousands of others.

Cindy Kerr started an organization called ConKerr Cancer after she lost her son Ryan to a form of bone cancer.

She now travels the country helping sick children in the hospital to sew colorful pillow cases.

"It's great because they get a choice about something, which they don't always get when they're in the hospital.  It sort of breaks up the monotony from them being in the hospital," Kerr said.

Tuesday, she visited the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, trying to put a smile on the faces of many.

"I know, having been a parent of a child that had cancer or was in the hospital for awhile, what it's like.  There's nothing better than seeing your own child smile, so for me seeing those smiles just lights my day up," she said.

The organization has delivered 415 thousand pillow cases since its inception in 2002.
