Trip of a lifetime for veteran Joseph Koenig

It's a trip of a life time for veteran Joseph Koenig. There was a time he wasn't sure he'd live to see this day.

"We were on a mission, Southern France. A German fighter shot us down and we were captured and I spent 14 months as a prisoner of war," Koenig said.

His experiences give this trip special meaning. By his side touring the memorials in Washington, D.C., is his son, who also served in the military. And carrying on the tradition, Koenig's grandson is also in serving overseas.

"I have a grandson who is over in Iraq. He really wanted to come back and get on to go with us. In fact I got a call from him last night wishing us a good trip," Koenig said.

It's a long and exhausting day for the 90 World War II veterans on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. But, it's a trip they are grateful to be able to take.

"When I was in prison camp, I didn't know if I would ever get back and to be here is really great. It's really nice for them to do this," Koenig said.

The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to sending local Veterans to Washington D. C. to visit various historical sites and war memorials. Upcoming flights are planned in Waterloo and Dubuque in September. Another trip is planned out of Cedar Rapids in October.
