Waterloo police investigate downtown explosion

Waterloo police are examining debris from downtown Waterloo that appears to be from an explosive device.

The Waterloo Fire Department responded to reports of a loud boom and smoke coming from the roof of Morg's on Mulberry Street around 10 p.m. on Friday. Firefighters on the scene were not able to find any fire or smoke outside or inside the business.

Around 11 a.m. on Monday, Waterloo Police received a report of something suspicious in the alley east of Morg's. The Waterloo Police Bomb Unit found debris from a device that exploded. Officers collected evidence from the alley and are investigating what was used to make the explosive device.

Police say there was no evidence of fire and no damage to the building.
