DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Dubuque Regional Airport held its annual open house Sunday morning.

This fly-in, drive-in event saw more than 2,000 people throughout the morning and nearly 50 pilots.

The AirCare helicopter of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics made an appearance, and people could pay to sky-dive or take a sightseeing flight over the tri-states area.

Airport operations supervisor Todd Dalsing said it's just a coincidence the date of the open house fell on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.

"It's an annual event, and we always hold it this time of the year. The weather's always favorable. It just happened to fall on this weekend, and it was just kind of a way for us to honor that day as well," he said.

Families wandered the tarmac, admiring the planes, many of which the pilots built themselves.

Money from a pancake breakfast went to the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
