IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Iowa City Fire Department says unattended cooking is to blame for a fire that forced the rescue of two people.

Crews were called to the apartment building at 2401 Highway 6 East Wednesday night.  They say cooking oil caught fire and spread.

Tenants living in the apartment say they were awakened to the smell of smoke from a fire that started on the kitchen stove.

Fourteen year old Charlotte Mariner and her dad were trapped in a second story bedroom for several minutes before they were rescued.

"They came and got me out first and then they got my daddy out.  I'm real thankful that I lived because I really thought I was going to die," Mariner said.

A third person escaped the fire without any help from the fire department.  There were no injuries.
