A 66-year old Waterloo man was killed in an early morning fire on Thursday.

Fire officials say that Isaiah Labeaux, Jr. died in the fire that broke out around 4:30 a.m. at 118 Shilliam Ave in Waterloo.

Family and friends are now morning the loss of Labeaux.

"I was just shocked and devastated," said Olabelle Reed.  "Every time I would see him he would always have a lot to talk about. He was just real friendly."

Reed's parents used to live in the home.

"I heard it on the news and knew that was Ike's house because it was the only house on the block," said Reed.

She rushed to the Shilliam Avenue home and was saddened to find out her friend had died in a fire.

"Our family just loved him. He was really a fun guy. Friendly."

Fire crews believe the blaze started in the living room. Although it was contained to one room.  Smoke filled the entire house.

Labeaux's son had been visiting his father Wednesday night and told neighbors he thinks it may have been a candle that caused the fire.

"He said I should have put that candle out. He said he saw a big hole and he was almost certain that's the spot where the candle had been sitting," said Reed.

Labeaux had moved to Waterloo from New Orleans some time ago, and just recently got out of the hospital.

"He wasn't feeling the best all the time."

The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause, but they do not suspect foul play.
