Hundreds search for careers at Job$ Fair in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Dozens of companies, and hundreds of job seekers, tried to make successful connections Wednesday afternoon at the Hawkeye Community College "Hot Jobs Career Fair".

"I am looking for employment. Full time employment," said part-time bartender, and Master's Degree holder, Martha Torvik.

Matt Winfield, a 25 year-old who attended University of Northern Iowa, said he's looking for a job in "sales, any type of customer service."

Dozens of Cedar Valley companies report they need qualified workers, and they found plenty of candidates at the job fair in downtown Waterloo.

"I had to call back to the shop for more applications! 150 just isn't going to cut it," said Angie Maus of HyPro Inc. "I have a feeling we'll be able to fill the positions we have open with the individuals who are down here today."

Even with so many companies actively hiring, it was clear from the turnout that the demand for work is still greater than the need for employees.

"It's tough. It's not always easy to find a good job. I've been looking for a little while now -- a couple months," said Winfield.

Which is why Hawkeye Community College is on site -- not to hire, but to educate.

"We have our admissions office here, and they can help counsel you toward a better program to get trained for these great employers," said Brittany Jungck from Hawkeye Community College.

Overall, most folks say they are having success at the fair. They may not be leaving with a job, but they are a little more optimistic about their future.

"I think that the community really needs to feel like there's hope out there for people to make connections and find jobs," said Jungck.

"There's always something better," said Torvik. "I'm a firm believer that something will always come along."

If you weren't able to attend Wednesday's jobs fair, Hawkeye Community College offers help for unemployed workers. The new Career Services Center is open Monday through Friday at the main campus in Waterloo. For more information, click here.
