UPDATE: 18-year-old man dies in Cedar Rapids assault

Posted: Updated:

A Hiawatha man has died after an assault in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night.

Cedar Rapids Police were called to St. Luke's Hospital around 6:50 p.m. where 18-year-old Zachary Maloney died from injuries he received in a fight.

Police say Maloney was involved in an argument with a friend at 1237 Lake Avenue NE just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday.  Police say the argument escalated in the parking lot of the business, where Maloney worked.

"It just went from words, to pushing and shoving, to altercation, wrestling," said Sgt. Cristy Hamblin with the Cedar Rapids police department.

Afterwards friends drove Maloney to nearby St. Luke's hospital where he was pronounced dead within an hour.

Police were then notified of the incident.  Investigators are now waiting for the results of a pending autopsy before filing any charges.

"We're not sure if it's the result of the altercation, if there was something medically.  That's part of the investigation," Hamblin said.

Those close to Maloney tell KWWL he was loved by everybody, and that he was supportive of family and friends.

They say the former Cedar Rapids Prairie high school student, who was affectionately called Boo by loved ones, loved to skateboard and will be missed.

The owner of the business where Maloney worked released a short statement sending well-wishes to both families involved.

The owner declined further comment.

Police are not releasing the name of the other person involved in the altercation at this time.
