Terps beat 'Canes as Miami program faces scrutiny

After a month of controversy surrounding athletics at the University of Miami, the Hurricanes' football team finally took the field. Or most of the `Canes anyway. They were minus eight players suspended in the wake of allegations that several team members accepted money and other favors from a school booster who's in jail after being convicted of running a Ponzi scheme.

The short-handed `Canes played decently but fell 32-24 to Maryland. Danny O'Brien completed 31 of 44 passes for 348 yards and a TD for the Terps. Nick Ferrara kicked four field goals, including a go-ahead 32-yarder with 1:32 left.

Miami's suspensions included quarterback Jacory Harris, linebacker Sean Spence and defensive linemen Marcus Forston and Adewale Ojomo.

Stephen Morris capably filled in for Harris, going 19 for 28 for 195 yards and running for a touchdown. But on a fourth-and-4 in the final minute, the sophomore threw an interception that Cameron Chism took 54 yards for the clinching score with 39 seconds remaining.

The Atlantic Coast Conference match up featured two coaches in their first season on the job -- Maryland's Randy Edsall and Miami's Al Golden
