Dubuque celebrates Labor Day tradition

Dubuque's Labor Day parade Monday continued a tradition that's more than 20 years old.

Hundreds of people turned out to see the mile-long celebration in the downtown area.

Dubuque's major labor unions made appearances, along with local businesses, school marching bands and political candidates.

Mike Willis and his family watched their daughter play flute in the Washington Middle School marching band. He said his family had plenty of reasons to attend the parade.

"To support our daughter, of course, but also just to be a part of the community, to see everybody, to see the political candidates and just to be out and enjoy the beautiful weather," Willis said.

Parade organizer Jim Waller said 85 groups signed up to march in the parade. The celebration, he said, is meant to honor everybody that goes to work every day.
