Lightning suspends Hawkeye football game - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Hawkeyes win weather delayed season opener

The Iowa Hawkeyes have won their season opener over Tennessee Tech 34-7.  Lightning from thunderstorms moving through Iowa City suspended play in the 3rd quarter.  It caused the game to be delayed about one hour.  Officials made the decision due to safety concerns.  Fans were asked to leave their seats and move to areas out of harm's way while the teams returned to the locker room.  Once play resumed, many of the fans decided not to return since the Hawkeyes held a 34-0 lead.  "Once it was apparent that within 10 or 20 miles of the stadium, there was a direct lightining pattern coming to the stadium, that was the point where we made the decision to clear the field from the competitors and ultimately the stadium," said Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta.
