Overnight storms bring down trees in Northeast Iowa

Thunderstorms rolling through eastern Iowa knocked out power to a number of communities early Saturday morning. Around 4:00 a.m., MidAmerican Energy reported more that 5,000 customers in the Waterloo area without power.  We found some of the worst damage in areas around Orange Elementary School in the far southern part of Waterloo.  Dozens of large trees came crashing down around houses and the school building.   But it appears, there was no major damage to any homes.  Some power lines were cut in half in the Hawkeye Road area.

A tree in the 1900 block of Lorraine Avenue in Waterloo fell on a car and blocked the road. The family in the home says the lights flickered around midnight, but they did not know of the damage until the sun came up. No one was injured, but the family said they think the car is a complete loss.
