It figured to be a pretty good matchup with two teams going up against each other coming off state championships in their respective classes.
Iowa City Regina had other ideas.
The Regals grabbed control early against rival Solon, knocking off the Spartans 35-9.
In 2010, Regina ended the Spartan's 42 game win streak. The Regals have now won two in a row in the series.
It was the big play that helped Regina run away from Solon this time around.
Up 7-3 in the first quarter, Joe McCaffery weaved his way to a 72 yard touchdown run and a 14-3 lead.
Then, after forcing a turnover, the Regals' quarterback Nate Streb scored on a 17 yard keeper to put Regina up 21-3 at the half.
Solon fought hard to stay in the game.
J.J. Hanus found fellow senior Cody Fritz on a fourth down play in the third quarter for a 5 yard score. The lead was cut to 21-9 after the ensuing two point conversion failed. But that's as close as Solon would get.
Jacbob Vollstedt ripped off a 58 yard fourth quarter run inside the Spartan 10. He would later cap off the drive with a one yard touchdown run.
The Regals would add one more score before it was said and done.
