Cedar Falls opened with an impressive 49-3 victory at Dubuque Hempstead last week behind a six touchdown performance by all-state tailback Barkley Hill. East High got rocked 56-13 by Iowa City West in its season opener.
The Trojans with a little trickery to begin the game. A squib kick right down the middle caught the Tigers napping. East High came up with the ball and from the first play of scrimmage at the Cedar Falls 42-yard line Desmond Van Arsdale rolls out to his right and finds number 4 LaTray Reed for a 10-yard gain.
The Trojans put up a good fight until the ball was put in the hands of Barkley Hill. The future Clone toward the end of the first quarter takes over. Four plays later it would be Hill punching it in for the games first score 7-zip Tigers with 3 minutes left in the first.
Van Arsdale goes back to work, drops back and number 45 Ben Challgren picks it off and rumbles his way to the end zone, but the TD would be taken away because of a block in the back. That would set up this beautifully thrown ball over the shoulder to number 19 James Harrington in the back of the end zone....13-zero at the end of one.
Barkley Hill would get into the act a few minutes later taking the ball from the Tigers 37-yard line in the second quarter and cutting his way up the middle down the sidelines all the way to the Trojans 7-yard line before he was finally knocked out of bounds. A few plays later Hill walks into the end zone untouched making it 20-zip. It would be 27-zero at the half. Tigers roll 41 to 6.
