Lower your library fine by feeding the hungry

1 in 6 Americans are hungry every day. To draw awareness to the need for food donations in the community of Cedar Rapids, the Metro Library Network is hosting a Food for Fines week Sept. 3-9.

In exchange for donating one non-perishable food item, $1 will be taken off your current library fines, up to $20. Donations are being accepted at the Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha or Marion libraries during regular hours. Fees for lost items, damaged items or collection fees are excluded. Donations will be given to the HACAP Food Reservoir for local distribution. They give away 1.7 million pounds of food each year.

This program is held in conjunction with the Inside Out with Alton Brown speaker series September 9.

"While bringing a celebrity chef and cookbook author to the area, we wanted to work with our Metro Library partners in Hiawatha and Marion to raise awareness of food insecurity in our communities," said Amber Mussman, Public Information Officer at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.
