Fuel gel recalled due to burn risk

Two million bottles and jugs of pourable gel fuels are being recalled because of the risk of serious burns. Nine companies are involved in the voluntary recall. The gel products, sold since 2008, are used in outdoor firepots.

The products have been linked to dozens of burn injuries as well as two deaths. Napa Home & Garden recalled all of its products after they were linked to 28 injuries. At that time, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a statement saying all pourable gel fuel poses flash fire hazards, regardless of manufacturer.

The companies involved in the recall include:

  • Bird Brain Inc., of Ypsilanti, MI
  • Bond Manufacturing of Antioch, CA
  • Sunjel Company (2 Burn Inc.) of Milwaukee NV
  • Lamplight Farms Inc of Menomonee Falls, Wis.
  • Luminosities Inc (Windflame) of St. Paul, MN
  • Pacific Décor Ltd. of Woodinwille, WA
  • Real Flame of Racine, Wis.
  • Smart Solar Inc. of Oldsmar, FL
  • "I urge consumers to stop using the gel fuel as there is a serious and even deadly risk of flash fires and burns when they are added to an already burning pot," says CPSC Chair Inez Tenenbaum. She pointed out that consumers can't always tell whether a flame is out before pouring more gel into firepots.

Consumers should contact the manufacturer for instructions on how to get a refund.
