CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids police officer is back on the streets after being assaulted in March 2009.

Officer Tim Davis, 32, was severely injured on March 29, 2009 while responding to a robbery call.  He was punched in the face by Jose Rockiett and suffered a fractured skull and brain swelling after falling and hitting his head on the street.

Davis returned to work in August 2009 after months of hospitalization and rehab, but was not on patrol and was only working limited hours.

Davis is currently assigned to work with a training officer and has already passed tests measuring his psychological well-being, firearms proficiency and physical fitness.

According to Police Chief Greg Graham, Davis will work with a partner for at least three months while he completes the field training that new officers go through.

Rockiett, who was 17 at the time of the assault, was prosecuted as an adult and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
