Campus shooting drill at Wartburg College

It was only a drill, but Wartburg College campus in Waverly, was the scene of an active shooter situation Wednesday morning.

The drill was to practice a response to a possible shooter on campus. There was one shooter and multiple actors injured as part of the drill. Wartburg Security was able to test its alert text-messaging system, as well. The Waverly Police Department says it's a pro-active way for area law enforcement to be ready for any scenario.

"People sometimes forget that these situations occur. It's unfortunate, but we have to train and be ready for these situations when they do occur. It gets everybody in the forefront that these thing may happen and it's important for us in law enforcement to be prepared for that," said Richard Pursell, Waverly Police Chief.

Chief Pursell says this was a surprise for his officers. He said it got their hearts pumping, making it seem like a real situation.
