Hawkeye's Vandenberg ready to step up

After waiting in the wings for the past two years, James Vandenberg is ready to take over the reigns of the Iowa Hawkeye offense.

Vandenberg started two games at quarterback during his freshman season following an injury to then starter, Ricky Stanzi, and the Keokuk native showed Hawk fans a glimpse of the future. In his first ever start Vandenberg nearly led Iowa to an upset victory at powerful Ohio State, losing it in overtime.  The following week, he orchestrated a Hawkeye win over Minnesota.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz and Vandenberg's teammates believe he is ready to lead the Hawkeyes.

Ferentz said, "Coaches and players have the luxury of seeing things you haven't seen and that's just watching everything he does whether it be practice, the way he comes in the building, the way he trains, just everything he does he has a way about him that really exudes confidence."

Iowa receiver Marvin McNutt says, "You've definitely seen him mature a lot, but a lot of it goes back to that he's had Rick in front of him somebody who's shown him how to lead the offense, how to do things right, and how to win games. When you have somebody like that it definitely helps the situation when you can study someone who knows the game."

Vandenberg will lead the Hawkeyes in their season opener against Tennessee Tech at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.  Game time is set for 11:05 a.m.
