Drill helps law enforcement prepare for real life anthrax threat

Posted:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Rescue crews responded to the Waterloo post office Tuesday morning for an anthrax threat... but it was just a drill.

Waterloo police and fire, the Iowa State Patrol, and other county and state emergency and health officials participated in the decontamination exercise.

It was all practice for a bioterrorism event. Police tape surrounded the building and some streets were blocked off by law enforcement.

In the scenario, anthrax was reportedly traced in a package from the post office that was en route for delivery. It was located on Highway 20 and brought back to the site where HazMat crews would, in a real life situation, handle it, and transport it to Iowa City for testing.

Officials say more training like this is needed after events like September 11.

The post office stayed open during the drill.
