The Decorah Vikings and Union Knights enjoyed outstanding 2010 seasons. Decorah advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 3A playoffs, while Union finished the regular season unbeaten, but suffered a first round upset loss. The Union Knights and their outstanding tailback Wes Burnside look to write a new script in 2011.
Believe it or not Burnside was bottled up for most of the first half, but some Knight fans knew something was coming. Quarterback Trev Hadachek delivers by finding Sophomore Jay Scheel in the back of the endzone for a spectacular 31-yard touchdown catch. The Knights take a six zero lead into the second quarter.
Decorah's special teams then begins to make an impact on the game. Number 80 Jacob Humpal takes it nearly 30 yards to the house before he gets wrapped up. Joshua Lee then boots a 27-yarder thru the uprights making it 6-3 Knights.
Roughly a minute later the Vikings special teams do it again. Humpal once again takes the punt and dodges one defender then 9 more in route to nearly a 50 yard punt return to the endzone before getting upended at the seven yard line.
Two plays later Gayge Samuelson is in for the touchdown making it 10 to 6 Vikings at the half, but the Knights come back in the second half and win it, 20 to 17.
