The third person charged in the murder of Curtis Bailey in Marengo in 2009 has been found guilty by a Scott County jury.

Denise Frei, Bailey's common-law wife, was charged along with her son, Jacob Hilgendorf, and Jessica Dayton.

Bailey, 33, was found dead in his Marengo home on July 18, 2009.

In court this week, Frei said she killed Bailey because she felt it was the only way she could protect her family.

Thursday, a jury found Frei guilty, much to the relief Bailey's family.

"It's hard when we're going through it, but when that verdict comes in, it's just a weight off your shoulders knowing that it's all done, it's over with.  We can go on with our lives," said Bailey's son, Alex.

"We're not vengeful people, but they took away a big part of our life, and can't get that back," said Michelle Geary, Curtis Bailey's ex-wife.

Frei's sentencing is expected in September in Iowa County Court.

The case was moved to Scott County because of pre-trial publicity.

Dayton was convicted last year and Hilgendorf was convicted earlier this year.
