WATERLOO (KWWL) -

An off-duty Black Hawk County Sheriff's deputy has died after being stricken during a workout.

Sheriff Tony Thompson says 32-year-old Doug Norton died Monday night at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Norton was working out earlier Monday at The W Wellness and Recreation Center in Waverly, when he started to feel ill. Norton called his wife and asked to be taken to the hospital. After arriving at Waverly Health Center, Norton was transported to Allen Hospital in Waterloo. Doctors say Norton was experiencing a heart attack. He was stabilized and then transported to UIHC, where he went into cardiac arrest and later died.

A heart problem is suspected. Thompson says Norton's family has asked for an autopsy.

Thompson says that Norton's death was a shock especially because Norton "was the epitome of health."

Norton started working at the Sheriff's Office in 1998. He had worked in the jail division and was currently assigned to third shift patrol.

A memorial fund has been established at Veridian Credit Union.

Funeral services are still be finalized, but they are expected to happen later this week in Waverly.
