Tigers' Verlander first in baseball to 19 wins this season

Justin Verlander became the first 19-game winner in the majors, leading Detroit to a 5-2 win over Tampa Bay. Verlander improved to 19-5 by winning his seventh consecutive start. He gave up one run and three hits in seven innings. The 19 wins match his career high, set in 2009.

Alex Avila stayed hot for the Tigers with a two-run homer. The All-Star catcher is 25 for 59  with five homers and 14 RBIs this month.

Wilson threw 6 2-3 scoreless innings for his 13th victory as Texas blanked Boston 4-0. Wilson struck out four while limiting the Red Sox to four singles. Mike Napoli hit a three-run homer off of Red Sox starter Erik Bedard  who fell to 4-9, is 0-2 in his four starts since being acquired from Seattle last month. The loss drops Boston a game back of the idle Yankees for first in the AL East.
