Testing for HPV more effective than others finding cervical cancer

Testing for two strains of HPV may be more effective than current cervical cancer screening tests.

A study of more than 47,000 women over age 25 compared the performance of HPV testing to liquid-based cytology, test similar to a pap smear.

Researchers found evidence of cancer more often with the HPV test than with cytology.

Experts say HPV testing should become the primary screening tool for cervical cancer, and use cytology only when you get a positive HPV result.
