Officer injured while helping pedestrians at State Fair

A Des Moines police officer is in critical condition after he was hit by a pickup truck while directing traffic at the Iowa State Fair. Officer Phoukham Tran was hit just before midnight Saturday. The crash happened just outside the main gate of the state fair.

Officer Tran was one of several officers helping pedestrians cross an intersection when he was injured. Officials say he'd helped a group of people cross when he was hit by the pickup truck.

"He has internal injuries to his body and he's got some injuries to his head," said Sergeant Chris Scott of the Des Moines Police Department.

Officials say the impact from the truck threw Officer Tran about 20 feet into the air.

Police say the driver of the pickup, 37-year-old Keith Terry of North Carolina, was arrested. He faces a drunken driving charge.
