Jantz named ISU starter, Tiller ineligible

Paul Rhoads named junior college transfer Steele Jantz as the Cyclones starting quarterback for the upcoming season.  Rhoads also acknowledged that junior quarterback Jerome Tiller had been ruled academically eligible.

Jantz, a transfer from City College of San Francisco, battled Tiller, and redshirt freshman Jared Barnett for the starting spot.  Saturday night Rhoads also indicated that he would have still been named ISU's quarterback even if Tiller had maintained his eligibility.

"Steele emerged from a group of 3 quarterbacks by displaying the 3 qualities that we were looking for most consistently," said Rhoads, "and that's decision making, throwing accuracy and that's getting things done with his feet."

Jantz had been a favorite of the message board fans from the beginning.  After Thursday's practice, he addressed the added pressure.

"I understand that there's going to be kind of an expectation from the fans," said Jantz, "so I just try to not pay attention to that, and I really just stay focused on what I need to do to get better."

Iowa State opens at home against UNI on September 3.
