Local barbershop closing after more than 50 years

A Cedar Valley business is closing its doors next week -- but not without a few protests from loyal customers.

Simcox & Fink Barber Shop has operated since March of 1960 in Cedar Falls.  Jack Simcox opened the store after working at his uncle's shop in Waterloo for several years.  In 1963, Dean Fink came to work for Simcox after graduating from barber school.  He became co-owner, and worked side-by-side with Simcox until 2001.

Deb Morgensen, Simcox's daughter, came to work for her dad's business in 1990.  She took over as co-owner when Simcox retired ten years ago.

The operation is one of the last true barber shops around in the area. Few places will still sit you down without an appointment, wrap a warm towel around your neck, and treat you to the latest town gossip.  It's that kind of comradery that Fink said he'll miss the most.

But at 67 years old, Fink is ready to retire.  He's planning to spend time with his young grandchildren and start work on his "honey-do" list his wife has been compiling.  Morgensen is moving into a different field and says she's also ready to leave the barber chair behind.  Simcox said, he's sorry to see his family's business and legacy come to an end.  But as he put it -- nothing lasts forever.
